CB&Q E7 9922B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9922B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9922B heading Train Number 11, the Nebraska Zephyr, at Galva, Illinois on October 12, 1956, photograph by P. Stringham, print by William A. Raia, Chuck Zeiler collection. Behind the baggage car is the seven car articulated trainset (one of two such trainsets) from the second Twin Cities Zephyr (TCZ), removed from TCZ service in late 1947 and refurbished at Aurora for Nebraska Zephyr service. Included in the refurbish work was the raising of the floors in the cars 2½ inches. As built the windows were located higher than usual because at the time it was believed that passengers would feel discomfort from observing the train moving at the high speeds attained by the TCZ. The high windows permitted view of the scenery while resticting the view of the ground. The fear of discomfort proved unfounded and, if fact, passengers complained about the resticted view. Gentle ramps were installed for transition from the raised floor to the vestibules. One of the TCZ trainsets is at the Illinois Railway Museum (reduced to a five car set around 1965) and the other set is rumored to be in Saudi Arabia. The locomotive was completed by EMD November 24, 1946 (c/n 2951) and wrecked at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. It was scrapped soon after.

CB&Q 225 Juno
Title:  CB&Q 225 Juno
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Observation number 225, named Juno, on Train #12, the eastbound Nebraska Zephyr at Galva, Illinois on August 25, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Train #12 was a hard train to photograph, at least for me. I lived in Naperville, and by the time #12 got there, it was about 8:45 PM, too late to expose film. But I happened to be in Galva on this date (about 100 miles west of Naperville), and caught #12 pausing for its scheduled station stop at 6:26 PM CST (its 7:26 DST locally). The Nebraska Zephyr was a mail train with passenger accommodations, in this case, the articulated trainset from the second Twin Cities Zephyr. The June 1965 Official Guide lists the following equipment for #11 and #12: Observation, 30 Parlor seats. Chicago-Omaha-Lincoln; Dining-Refreshment Car, Chicago-Omaha; Reclining Seat Chair Cars, Chicago-Omaha-Lincoln.

This locomotive was traded to EMD as credit on an order of SD45's in February 1969.

Title:  CB&Q SD9s 443
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD9s 443 at Galva Illinois on August 26, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler

Built on EMD Order 5549, twenty of these SD9s model were delivered to the CB&Q between August and September 1957. They were assigned road numbers 440-459 (later, BN 6187-6206), and were unique to the Q in a few aspects. They had a single fuel tank, a single control stand (thus the suffix 's' in the SD9s model designation), and they had a single Mars light. Previous SD9 orders all had two Mars lights and two fuel tanks, some equipped with steam generators, and one tank carried water

Prominent in this photo is the rectangular exhaust stack partially covering the second (from the rear) radiator intake grill. This was for the Vapor Clarkson standby heater which was installed in the carbody below the radiators. Its purpose was to provide heat and circulation for the diesel engine cooling water, allowing the diesel to be shut down in cold weather. This feature was seldom employed due to the difficulty in restarting the diesel prime mover with cold batteries.
